Susan and Lisa, both licensed psychotherapists and registered yoga teachers will be presenting a full afternoon workshop at the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation 2014 Conference, in Long Beach, CA.  Movement will be encouraged; dress comfortably! CEUs available. Registration required.

Workshop Description

Over the past decade yoga’s popularity in the US and abroad has skyrocketed, with the ancient practice making its way beyond gyms and studios and into treatment facilities, prisons and even private psychotherapy practice. People experiencing stress are turning to yogic modalities in growing numbers, as are those who work with them.  Current research shows not only that these modalities work, but howthey work to produce changes in brain, nervous and endocrine systems to heal the effects of severe stress and trauma.  In fact, trauma-informed yoga services is a new and rapidly growing grassroots movement in human services and treatment in the USA and abroad. In this workshop we will discuss the potential risks and rewards of the practice of yoga in treatment for PTSD and stress related disorders and outline clear best practices for incorporating trauma sensitive yoga.  In addition to exploring recent research, we will discuss the theory and practical applications of yoga, as well as its relationship to somatic psychotherapy, energy psychology and Herman’s three-stage model of trauma treatment. We will explore how yoga postures, breath work and philosophy can effectively reduce and even eliminate the negative effects of extreme abuse and stress.  We will also discuss how and when yoga can be most helpful for those dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Complex Trauma, and how yogic modalities can impact those experiencing trauma and dissociation along with best practices for service delivery in a variety of settings. As with any therapeutic modality, it is best for clinicians to have a well integrated experience of new treatment techniques. In this theoretical, practical and experiential workshop, we offer an opportunity to enrich and refine our concepts of yoga and trauma as participants involve their whole body and being through “hands on” yogic practices led by two certified yoga instructor/therapists. Members of the audience will benefit from learning new ways to reduce anxiety and promote deep restoration and healing, and from a discussion of yoga as a tool for self-care and processing of vicarious trauma as well as one for the treatment room. Come prepared to move, breathe and relax!!

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the risks and benefits of using yoga with clients experiencing trauma and dissociation and explain principles of trauma sensitive yoga.
  • Apply theories of yoga, trauma treatment and somatic psychotherapies to their work with clients as well as their own experience of vicarious trauma.
  • Summarize relevant research on yoga as an effective tool for treating complex trauma.
